In the Beginning...

If you cast your mind back, you probably remember how it all started. Maybe it was a traumatic accident where you hurt yourself, or maybe it was something seemingly small and inconsequential - like bending and twisting to pick something up. 

Either way, you had an episode of pain, but you dug down and expected it to get better. But...it didn't. 

Weeks passed, then months. You went to one expert after another. Maybe you even had surgery...but the pain remained. 

You've likely had many explanations for what's causing the pain. But there's probably one explanation that hasn't been aired. There’s one vital piece of the chronic pain puzzle that’s still missing.

Now, if you're ready, we're going to take a good look at that missing piece. 

A Little Understood Fact: Why
Chronic Pain Changes Everything

You see, there’s something very interesting that happens when you get pain of any kind. Your body immediately sets up what’s known as sensitisation. That is – all the nerves in the area go on red alert, and messages from that area get top priority.

This is perfectly normal  - it’s your brain’s way of keeping an eye on the area, making sure you don’t reinjure yourself and keeping you safe.

Here’s a diagram of how this process normally works:

As you can see, when you get injured, pain sensitisation happens – to take care of the area. But as you heal – the pain sensitisation reduces and by the time the injury is healed the sensitisation has also switched off and your pain is gone.

But – in people with chronic pain – something different happens. Instead of turning down the sensitisation as the area heals – your body either keeps it at the same level – or TURNS IT UP.

This means that pain messages from the area – even though it’s healed – still feel as bad as when you first injured it.

Here’s a diagram of how this looks:

As you can see – the injury has healed. But due to sensitisation your pain is just as bad (in some cases worse) as when you first injured it.

It’s like your pain system is still on ‘red alert’ – despite you being stable and healed. Your system is still stressed, still producing cortisol and inflammatory agents. And – unless you can find a way to turn your pain system down – out of the red zone – your chronic pain will continue.

"But wait!" – I can hear you say. "I injured this area. Scans and MRI’s show that there’s been damage."

Well – there’s an amazing thing about your body. Even if you break your femur – the strongest bone in your body – 2 months later it will have healed. If you’ve different experts check out your injured area – and none of them have been able to cure your pain – it’s highly likely you have pain sensitisation.

How real can the pain be that’s only created in your brain?

Here's the fact of the matter: all pain is felt in the brain. When you're under anaesthetic you could have open heart surgery and not feel a thing - because your brain is not receiving messages. And similarly, your brain can receive 'real' pain messages that are not in any way connected with physical damage.

One extreme example of this phenomenon is phantom limb pain. This is when amputees get a horrible ache from a leg or arm that’s been amputated. It’s a serious problem – and causes real pain.

If someone can have pain from a limb THAT'S NOT THERE - then you certainly can have pain from an injury that's already healed. 

That's Part One of chronic pain. 

Part Two is Trigger Points.

Trigger Points & their Role in
Chronic Pain

Trigger points are what your body does to protect you when have pain. They’re small knots or areas of spasm in your muscles. They switch on to protect your joints and tendons – and when you have chronic pain – they don’t switch off.


Some people have a few active trigger points, some people have dozens. Trigger points can radiate pain throughout your body or in a specific location. It all depends on the type and number of trigger points that you have.

They can cause shooting pain, dull aching pain, and stiffness. And if you have active trigger points, all the anti-inflammatory pills, gels, exercises - even surgery won't do you any good. What will help?

What helps trigger point pain is knowing how to find and switch off trigger points - and stop them coming back.

All the triggers and their pain patterns have been carefully mapped out. You can learn to treat them yourself – it’s not difficult. But to keep them from coming back – you need to address the underlying cause.

Back pain is one of the most common complaints in the chronic pain patients I see. And often the problem is trigger points – or trigger points secondary to something else – like a ruptured disc.

The problem is – while a slipped disc has a natural recovery cycle, trigger points set off by the pain of the ruptured disc can continue for years - until they're treated.

"I'm now happy to say that I don't have to search for a cure anymore..."

"I found my fingers to be the most efficient of all tools.Technique was the most important factor in treating my trigger points. I was using a lot of pincer method but when I started viewing Dr Kuttner's DVD's and followed his technique, that's when I started getting excellent results and eventually a cure.

"Starting at the right place made a world of difference for me. I focused on my calves since there are a lot of postural muscles there and one of my first symptom after my injury was plantar fasciitis (tobogganing injury to sacrum). I was a runner at the time and made my condition worse by continuing to run and not being able to find a provider to help solve my issues. The pain just kept on migrating and new problems were creeping up. I eventually stopped jogging and concentrated my energy on fixing my broken body.

"Being in the health care field helped me to focus. Approaching the muscles straight on with my fingertips instead of pinching seeming to make the difference and focusing on every small piece of tender tissue. Viewing Dr Kuttner's DVD was a key factor as just looking at drawings or pictures did not have the same effect. His guidance was what made the difference.

Thank you doctor for the manual. I am definitely going to make full use of it. On trigger points and a bit on how wonderfully it helped me. I do not have words to express my gratitude. In 2011 I started experiencing tremendous pain in my shoulder/right arm. Progressively the pain in my arm just got sooo bad that I was unable to lift my arm to apply roll on or even shave under my arm. I could barely lift my arm from my side. Reaching up was impossible. To dress/undress myself left me with excruciating pain and it often left me in a incapable bundle on the ground. In tears of pain. Simple things like putting on my undies became a painstakingly difficult operation. Reaching to even get a cup from the shelf was not possible.

Putting my arm behind my back was something I had completely been unable to do for more than one and a half years. Just stretching out in the morning left me clutching my arm in excruciating pain which lasted for minutes afterward. I was only 54 but felt that I will soon lose all ability to use my arm. I thought the only outcome would be an operation. Sonar's had been taken of my shoulder and arm as well as x-rays, but it revealed nothing. Night times became horror times as I was constantly in agonizing pain.

Every movement, every turn I made was just pure suffering. I lived on pain and sleeping tablets. I dreaded going to bed. I love gardening and sewing but these things became an impossibility and in no time my garden became a jungle. I was no longer interested or capable of tending to it. The only thing on my mind was the constant agonizing pain I felt. I went at our local Provincial Hospital where I saw a orthopaedic surgeon who gave me an injection. Almost seconds after this injection, I was able to lift my arm although not completely and also not completely without pain. He suggested physio treatment. Which I religiously attended.

Then, one morning, not quite sure why, I took a solid sponge kind of ball and started pressing against the cupboard on (what I did not know at that stage) a pressure point. I felt a great sense of relief and started applying this more often even during the day. I then acquired a few extra balls, some glass, some hard pressed foam and one tennis ball. Different sizes. I suddenly wanted to know more and started looking on the internet on what I discovered to be another world. I could not believe the difference I started to feel and within one week could phone and cancel all my future physio appointments.

It has now almost one year free of pain. I work my garden as I have been all my life. Cleaning house is a joy and free of pain. For those thousands out there struggling too and not knowing that there is a way out I can but pray that they too, may see this light. It was a manual, similar like yours, that helped me back to life again. And last but by no means the least, I thank my Heavenly Father who through His Spirit, direct medical people like yourself to be instruments in His great plan. All the honour and glory to Him.
